Being that Samsung phones are currently one of the most popular and also gradually getting expensive, phones *cough* S20 Ultra *cough* it is logical to want to know if they’re waterproof.

In a short answer, although some of Samsung’s recent flagships are, not all Samsung phones are waterproof. So it’s best to check if a phone is waterproof or not before you buy or use around water.

Now if you own a Samsung phone or want to get a Samsung phone and you’re wondering if it’s waterproof because water may be something you can’t avoid, then read on.

HOW TO CHECK IF A SAMSUNG PHONE IS WATERPROOF

In order to find out if your current Samsung phone or the one you plan to get is waterproof, you’re going to have to check if it is having an IP68 rating.

We’ll get more into what IP ratings mean a little later but for now, just know that IP68 means resistance to dust and water.

So to check if the Samsung phone has an IP68 rating, you need to know the model of the phone and then check its specifications online or on its manuals.

For now, we’ll talk about the online method.

As stated, you need to know the model of the Samsung device you own or want to purchase. For example, Galaxy S10, Galaxy S10e, Galaxy S20 are 3 different popular models of Samsung phones.

If you don’t have the box the phone came with, you can check the model of your current Samsung phone by going to “Settings” and “About Phone”.

Alternatively, click here to download DevCheck, it is one of many apps you can use for getting a lot of information about the phone you use.

I am recommending the app because I know that it is hard to navigate these phones sometimes, but with this app, you’ll get to see the model of your phone fast and easy.

Watch the video below to see how to “see” the model of your current phone.

In the video you can see that after launching the app from the Play Store, I went straight to the “SYSTEM” section and under Device, the name and model of my phone are shown.

Although I don’t currently use a Samsung device, you can see that the model of my phone is “Infinix X626B”.

Whatever yours is, write it down because you’ll need it for the next step.

Say for example yours is “Galaxy S10”, what you’ll do next is type that into Google followed by “specs” (you can also type the model of the phone you wish to buy to find out if it has an IP68 rating).

You’re most likely going to see a result from gsmarena, click it and from there you will be able to see the phone’s IP rating.

See the video below to help you out.

Now that you know the IP rating of the device you own or are interested in, you’ll know if it is waterproof or not.

If it has an IP rating, then it has a degree of water or dust resistance. If it doesn’t, well, make sure you keep the phone away from water.

Before we get into the meaning of IP Rating and what not, if you’re only interested in knowing some Samsung devices that are waterproof, I’ll have a list of them in another article so you can check them out.

I’m saying this because things are about to get a little bit technical and I don’t want to bore some of you with all that.

That said, let’s continue.

WHAT DOES IP RATING MEAN

IP Rating or Ingress Protection ratings are used to define levels of sealing effectiveness of electrical enclosures against intrusion from foreign bodies such as water, dust, etc.

From the video above, you should have noticed that the IP rating is IP68. There are different numbers that can come after the IP.

The most common ones include 65, 66, 67, 68.

It ranges from being splash resistant to being completely waterproof (the higher the number the better the resistance).

To know more about IP Rating, click here to read this awesome resource I found on the internet that explains a whole lot more.

CONCLUSION

It’s understandable, having a phone that can be used around water is great, but I’ll have to point out that you shouldn’t purposely put your phone in water unless you absolutely have to.

Waterproofing of phones is mainly for avoiding accidents.

I know people take pictures and shoot videos under water with their phones and that’s great.

But ensure you don’t go beyond 1.5 meters or keep the phone in water for more than 30 minutes.
